Preparations continue for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with several key details now emerging regarding the vision for shooting sport during the Games.

The LA28 shooting sport programme is expected to place a strong focus on visibility, athlete experience and fan engagement, with medal events scheduled across almost the entire Olympic competition period. According to current plans, shooting medals are set to be awarded every day from Day 1 to Day 11 of the Games, with the exception of Day 7.

Organisers are also planning a greater number of evening finals for Rifle and Pistol events, helping maximise international broadcast exposure and ensuring balanced coverage for audiences in both Asia and Europe. Athletes competing in Air Rifle and Air Pistol are therefore expected to compete in prime-time final sessions.

Long Beach to host rifle and pistol events

Rifle and pistol competitions are planned to take place in a centralised shooting hall within the Long Beach Sports Park, where qualification and finals would be conducted on a single range.
The venue concept places shooting sport alongside several other Olympic disciplines, including handball, sport climbing, artistic swimming, beach volleyball and water polo, creating a more integrated Olympic environment for athletes and spectators alike.

Current plans also include expanded spectator seating with an expected capacity of approximately 2,000 seats, as well as the integration of new technologies designed to improve the viewing experience and help new audiences better understand the sport.

Traditional outdoor setting for shotgun events

Shotgun events are expected to take place at the Whittier Narrows Clay Shooting Center, using a multi-field layout with finals held on the central field.

The venue will maintain a traditional outdoor shooting environment, featuring natural grass fields and a backdrop of trees and distant mountains. Planned upgrades to the existing infrastructure are expected to further enhance the athlete and spectator experience.

The shotgun venue is also expected to offer seating for approximately 3,000 spectators and allow fans to move freely between qualification fields. Importantly, the current competition planning foresees no overlap between Shotgun finals and Rifle/Pistol finals, allowing spectators and broadcasters to follow every shooting medal event during the Games.

As preparations continue towards LA28, the plans reinforce the ambition to deliver a modern, accessible and highly visible Olympic shooting sport competition while maintaining the traditions and technical excellence of the sport.
